Arequipa, city in southern
Peru, capital of Arequipa Department, near Mollendo.
Located on the Pan-American Highway, the city is the
commercial center for southern Peru, northern Bolivia,
and western Brazil. Arequipa has a mild, dry climate
and is located in a beautiful mountain valley surrounded
by several peaks, the highest of which is Volcán
Misti (5822 m/19,101 ft), notable for a perfectly shaped
snowcapped cone.
The city of Puno is
located in the south east corner of Peru, on the shores
of the magnificent Lake Titicaca and only 126km from
the frontier with Bolivia. At 3,827m in altitude, Puno
is a rather cold and bleak town surrounded by the desolate
altiplano (or high plateau). It is not so much a destination
in itself but a necessary stop on the way to visit the
islands on Lake Titicaca, or when crossing the border
to Bolivia.
The small city of Huaráz
is the hub for all hiking activity, and frequent rural
buses transport enthusiasts to a variety of trailheads.
A Casa de Guias, located just off the main street, will
provide the latest information about routes and mountain
conditions, and can provide trekkers with a list of
porters and am . eros, burro drivers, who can help carry
gear on the long trek ahead
Chiclayo, city, northwestern
Peru, capital of Lambayeque Department and Chiclayo
Province, in an irrigated oasis of the Lambayeque River
valley. On the Pan-American Highway, Chiclayo is connected
by road and rail with the Pacific ports of Eten and
Pimentel. It also has an airport. Chiclayo was founded
in 1720 and became a city in 1835.
Located 275 south
of Lima, Nasca would just be a dusty little desert
town of little interest were it not for the strange
presence of massive, mysterious lines, etched into
the sands of the pampas more than a millennium ago.
Ancient peoples created a vast tapestry of "geoglyphs"--trapezoids
and triangles, 70-odd animal and plant figures, and
more than 10,000 lines--that have baffled observers
for decades.
Iquitos, city, northeastern
Peru, capital of Loreto Department. It is a port on
the Amazon River, approximately 100 km (about 60 mi)
from the point at which the Marañón River
unites with the Ucayali River to form the mainstream
of the Amazon.
