Samba

How many of you have seen the word Samba on one of the rhythm selection keys of your grandmother's old electric organ along with Bossa Nova. A descendant of African beats, Samba has become almost synonymous with Brazilian culture.

Check out roots samba at an area samba school where people practice for the big parade during CARNIVAL. Go with a group, as these areas are usually complicated to reach. After you get over your shyness, perhaps by drinking a few caipirinhas you can't help but get into the powerful energy and joy of people singing and dancing all around you.

If you want to check out ballroom samba, try a samba parlor or gafeiras. It's really worth a look. Here you'll also find other Latin rhythms such as salsa and lambada.
